Two police officers who have spent much of their careers in the Borders have featured on the New Year Honours List.

Ch Supt George Simpson, who was head of the CID in the region during a 30-year career with Lothian and Borders Police, receives the Queen's Police Medal.

He was subsequently appointed commander of the force's City of Edinburgh division in 2006.

There is also an honour for Keith Brough, a special constable from Newcastleton, who gets an MBE.

Mr Simpson, 52, who retired in May, has been credited with developing closer links between uniformed officers and detectives during his time as head of CID in the Borders.

On his promotion to divisional commander in Edinburgh he helped police, council and other partners combine resources to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

'Talented individuals'

He said: "I am overwhelmed and delighted to be recognised in this way, and I appreciate all the calls I have received from well-wishers congratulating me."

He also paid tribute to the "talented individuals" he had worked with in his time with the police.

Mr Brough, 53, was honoured for his work with communities in and around Newcastleton and Hawick.

He said: "I was very humbled but very proud that people would think me deserving of such an award.

"I'd like to thank the people in the communities I work for, as well as fellow officers and colleagues in Lothian and Borders Police."
