Angler rescued from rising river

A rescue helicopter was called out to rescue the fisherman

A fisherman has been rescued by helicopter from rapidly rising waters on a river in south west Scotland.

The angler was left cut off by the River Nith at Carnsalloch House, Kirkton, north of Dumfries, on Tuesday evening as heavy rain hit the area.

Police said the man sought refuge in a nearby hut and contacted emergency services who were sent to the scene.

A helicopter from HMS Gannet was contacted and was able to rescue the fisherman, who was not injured.

Flooding has caused a string of problems across Dumfries and Galloway with both major and minor roads being affected.

The River Nith flooded the Whitesands area overnight but has since subsided.

Police advice

Drivers have been advised to exercise caution on any roads affected by rain.

In a separate incident, Newton Stewart police were called out to investigate reports of two teenagers who had been seen wading in the waters of the River Cree.

However, it was subsequently established that the pair had come out of the river and were safe and well.

Police have advised the public to take care near the region's rivers while their water levels remain high.
