Dyeing company hit by jobs blow

A textile dyeing company in southern Scotland has gone into administration with the loss of 62 jobs.

The Langholm Dyeing Company based at Waterside Mills in Langholm is one of the town's major employers.

A total 52 employees have been issued with immediate redundancy notices and a further 10 have been retained to help wind-up operations.

Skills Development Scotland has been in talks with the company to offer support to the staff affected.

Employee numbers have fallen from 100 in recent years with the reduction blamed on the difficult climate in the UK textile industry.

Langholm councillor Dennis Male said the move into administration represented the loss of a significant employer in the town.

"It is quite a serious blow for the economy of the Eskdale valley," he said.

"It is serious for this area because there are no employers of this size left in the area in the textile industry."
