A 23-year-old man from Jedburgh who was jailed for an assault outside a pub in the town has died in hospital.

Stephen Cobb was convicted at Selkirk Sheriff Court last year and was serving a two-and-a-half year sentence at HM Prison Edinburgh.

Police have been informed and a fatal accident inquiry will be held to discover the cause of his death.

The Scottish Prison Service has not released any further details of the incident.

Cobb was jailed at Selkirk Sheriff Court last year for an attack outside a Jedburgh pub.

The court was told he kicked and punched his victim unconscious and then repeatedly jumped on his head.

Sheriff Donald Ferguson said at the time it was a very serious assault which could have had tragic circumstances.
