The funeral of motor racing star David Leslie has taken place in south west Scotland.

Mr Leslie died in a plane crash which claimed a total of five lives in Kent two weeks ago.

He was cremated in a private ceremony, but his life was also celebrated at a memorial service, attended by friends and colleagues, at a Dumfries church.

The 54-year-old was born and brought up in Dumfriesshire and won nine races in the British Touring Car championship.

Mr Leslie died with four others when a private jet crashed into a housing estate in Farnborough, shortly after taking off from nearby Biggin Hill airfield on 30 March.

He was heading to a race testing session in France.

Mr Leslie was an influential figure in the motorsport world and, along with his father, helped young drivers get started in the sport.

He was remembered at the service in the Crichton Memorial Church as a "gentleman" and a "world-class racing talent".

Le Mans winner Allan McNish was among those who paid tribute to Mr Leslie during the hour-long memorial.

"He lit the spark in me - he was an inspiration to us all," Mr McNish said.

"The tricks David taught us, they were the foundation of our careers.

"He was a world-class talent behind the racing wheel."
