Irene Hogg was found dead on Wednesday
A primary school head teacher reported missing at the weekend in the Scottish Borders has been found dead.

Irene Hogg, 54, who worked at Glendinning Primary in Galashiels, was last seen on Sunday evening.

After a public appeal her car was spotted near Hownam, south of Kelso, at about 1900 GMT on Wednesday.

Police confirmed her body was found nearby. There were no suspicious circumstances and a post-mortem examination will be carried out.

Search and rescue services were also called out on Wednesday after Ms Hogg's car was discovered.

Staff and pupils were informed of her death on Thursday.

A statement issued by Scottish Borders Council said: "We are all deeply shocked and distressed by this tragic news."

It expressed "profound sympathy" to Ms Hogg's parents and family.

School community council chairwoman Patricia Thouw said it was a loss for the whole community.

"She was a real inspirational person for our school," she said.

"She will just be so greatly missed - not only by her P6/7 pupils who she taught, but by the whole school."

A service to celebrate Ms Hogg's life will take place at Glendinning Primary on Friday.
