Amazing win for Scottish skipper
Duggie Gillespie
Duggie Gillespie was called up to the race after leg one
A Scottish sailor has transformed the fortunes of a round-the-world yacht after being given an emergency call-up.

Duggie Gillespie, from Kirkcudbright, took on his role after the original skipper of the New York was injured.

The yacht was in ninth place in the 35,000-mile global Clipper race at the time, but under his charge it won the second leg from Brazil to South Africa.

The Scottish yacht Glasgow: Scotland with Style is leading the overall standings.

The 40-year-old Scots skipper saw his team beaten across the line to Durban in South Africa by another boat - the Hull and Humber.

'Really chuffed'

However, a four-hour penalty for that yacht meant that his crew took the victory honours for the second leg.

"I'm really chuffed, and not for me, for the team," said Mr Gillespie.

"We had a few things to sort out and we did that and we progressed and we learned."

The challenge, however, is far from over.

There are another five legs of the race in store taking the yachts to Australia, China, America and Jamaica before finishing in Liverpool next July.
