Broadband speed concerns voiced

A scheme to extend broadband provision in Scotland should also tackle the "unacceptable" service already on offer in some areas, an MP believes.

Tweeddale MP David Mundell said there were parts of southern Scotland where the service was "not fast enough".

He said he hoped a £3.5m project recently announced by the Scottish Government would address that issue.

People with problems have been asked to contact the government by the end of this year so work can start in 2008.

Last week the Scottish Government announced a scheme to extend broadband services to those who want a high-speed internet connection but cannot currently get connected.

'Unacceptable level'

Mr Mundell said he hoped to see the scope of the project extended.

"Some areas are classed as having broadband but in essence the service is just not fast enough," said the Conservative MP.

"This new scheme should take into account people getting broadband at an unacceptable level."

He said he would be writing to the enterprise minister to ensure he was aware of the situation.
