Port police to trial B&B scheme

The force is looking for suitable facilities in Stranraer
Police in Dumfries and Galloway are to pilot a new safety scheme which will see officers put up in bed and breakfast accommodation.

The move follows concerns about staff having to drive up to 70 miles home after a 12-hour shift.

At least a dozen officers involved in port security at Stranraer and Cairnryan live elsewhere in the region.

The force is now looking for suitable facilities in Stranraer where officers can stay overnight.

Other forces across the country are planning to monitor the scheme.

Health and safety

In the past, police officers could be ordered to relocate when transferred to another part of the region.

However, that is no longer the case and many opt to travel.

The chairman of Dumfries and Galloway Council's police committee, Ian Blake, said the scheme would tackle an important health and safety issue - and could also save money.

Last year it cost the force £68,000 to assist officers moving home.

However, the bed and breakfast provision is expected to cost less than £20,000 a year.
