Dunlops plant
The American firm has confirmed its takeover of the Dumfries site
One of the biggest employers in south west Scotland has been taken over by a US firm.

Henry Schein has confirmed the purchase of Dumfries-based veterinary supplies firm W&J Dunlop.

Dunlops was established in the town more than 80 years ago and has a workforce of about 450.

A spokesman for the US company said it was "delighted to enter the UK animal health market in such a strong position".

Obviously I'm very keen to find out what the impact of this takeover will be on the Dunlops warehouse in Dumfries, in terms of investment plans for the site, securing existing jobs and potentially creating new jobs
Russell Brown MP

Henry Schein is one of the largest providers of healthcare products and services in the North American and European market.

The terms of the deal to take over the Dumfries company have not been disclosed.

Dunlops was established in 1921 and has evolved from trading animal hides to becoming a leading veterinary supplier.

New York State-based Henry Schein said it believed there were opportunities to improve operating margins at the Scottish plant.

Dumfries and Galloway MP Russell Brown said he hoped to have talks with the new owners as soon as possible.

"Obviously I'm very keen to find out what the impact of this takeover will be on the Dunlops warehouse in Dumfries, in terms of investment plans for the site, securing existing jobs and potentially creating new jobs," he said.

"So I'm pursuing an early meeting with representatives from Henry Schein to discuss their intentions."
