The funding came too late for 2007 but would allow liberal arts courses to take in undergraduates in 2008.

ON THE MARCH: 10 JULY 2007

A group of students fighting to save Glasgow University's campus in Dumfries completed a 100-mile protest march.

The students were campaigning against the decision by the university to suspend new admissions at its Crichton campus.

POLITICAL BID: 23 MARCH 2007

A cross-party bid was made at Holyrood to get Glasgow University to reverse its move halting admission of undergraduates at the Crichton campus.

SNP MSP Alasdair Morgan urged the institution to wait until the outcome of a higher education review and was supported by his Conservative, Labour and Green counterparts.

PRINCIPAL QUESTIONED: 20 MARCH 2007

University of Glasgow principal Sir Muir Russell defended the institution's actions while on a visit to Dumfries.

He said the university could be proud of its work at Crichton.

He was in the town to make a speech on the future of higher education.

STUDENT PROTEST: 20 MARCH 2007

A number of student protesters gathered outside the Easterbrook Hall in Dumfries to make their feelings known about Glasgow University's decision.

Principal Sir Muir Russell was the main target of their ire as he arrived to give a talk.

DELEGATION DELIBERATES: 22 FEBRUARY 2007

A delegation from Dumfries and Galloway held "very positive" talks with the deputy first minister Nicol Stephen over the future of the Crichton campus in Dumfries.

A public sector delegation met him in Edinburgh to seek a more secure funding future for the campus

MINISTERIAL OFFER: 16 FEBRUARY 2007

The deputy education minister offered to meet Glasgow University and the Scottish Funding Council to discuss the Crichton campus in Dumfries.

Allan Wilson told MSPs during a debate at Holyrood he had no power to tell the university how to spend its money.

However, he said he would do whatever he could to find an "amicable solution" to the situation on the campus.

ADMISSIONS STOPPED: 14 FEBRUARY 2007

Glasgow University confirmed it would stop undergraduate admissions to its Dumfries operation in September.

The announcement came at the end of a university court meeting to discuss the future of the town's Crichton campus.

A short statement added that the university would hold talks over what future, if any, it had on the site.
