Dumfries and Galloway's new chief constable has taken up his post.

Pat Shearer, 51, is the former deputy chief constable of Grampian Police and succeeds David Strang, who has moved to the Lothian and Borders force.

Mr Shearer has more than 23 years' service with Grampian constabulary, starting in 1983 as a constable on uniformed duties within Aberdeen.

He is the eighth chief constable of the smallest force in mainland Britain, which has just 465 police officers.

Mr Shearer was selected after councillors interviewed three short-listed candidates.

He is in the process of moving to south west Scotland.

"The people of Dumfries and Galloway are proud of their force and I am certainly proud at becoming its newest recruit," he said.

"The force recently received a glowing report from Her Majesty's Inspectorate Constabulary.

"The effort and drive of staff was recognised in their findings and it was certainly apparent to me during my visits."

Mr Shearer said he hoped to continue the good work of his predecessors.

"I am extremely passionate about making a positive impact in the area," he said.

"I am strongly committed to tackling local issues like road collisions, illegal drug dealing and anti-social behaviour.

"We are all victims of these crimes and the force will continue to focus on such problems."
