Public drinking by-laws approved
Councillors have voted to ban drinking in public across the Scottish Borders.

The by-laws will be introduced in Hawick, Galashiels, Tweedbank, Selkirk, Kelso, Eyemouth and Coldingham.

It will give police powers to charge anyone caught drinking alcohol on the street or in parks. A similar by-law was tried in Galashiels in the 1990s.

Other communities across the region will have the choice of being included in the regulations when the by-law is reviewed each year.

Police hope the new regulations will help curb underage drinking and stop anti-social behaviour.
