Police launch their drink driving blitz

Police in the south of Scotland launched this year's annual crackdown on drink-drivers.

Officers from Lothian and Borders and Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary will be increasing mobile patrols and high visibility road checks.

Drivers have been warned to leave car at home if they are enjoying the festivities this year.

In recent years, a worrying trend has been the rise in the number of younger female drink-drivers.

Chief Inspector Kenny Buchanan of Lothian and Borders Police road policing, said: "If people drink or take drugs and drive they are risking not only their own lives but also the lives of innocent road users.

Driving ban

"Motorists caught drink/drug-driving face severe penalties in the courts including the risk of losing their licence, getting a criminal record, driving bans, fines and a prison sentence.

"A driving ban could also result in possible employment and financial problems. There is no safe limit when it comes to drinking and driving."
