A teenager has been arrested in connection with the theft of a baby Jesus figurine from a nativity scene in a Borders village.

Residents in Newcastleton were angered by the vandalism to the festive display which had power cables cut.

A police spokeswoman said a 17-year-old local male would be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal.

She added inquiries into the whereabouts of the baby Jesus model, valued at £250, were still continuing.

After hearing about the loss, beer can makers Crown Bevcan of Carlisle made a £300 donation to the Liddesdale Ladies Action Group in Newcastleton to purchase a replacement Jesus.
