Road accident victims identified

Police have released the names of a man and youth killed when their car was involved in a collision with a gritter.

Benjamin Pitkeathly, 20, from Dalbeattie, and Ian Brown, 16, were travelling in a Ford Focus when it crashed on Sunday.

The accident happened at 0915 GMT on the A711 Dumfries to Dalbeattie road. The road was reported to have been affected by black ice at the time.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary appealed for witnesses to come forward.

The latest tragedy brings the region's road death toll to 23, with five people killed in the last two weeks.
