More jobs lost at knitwear firm

Hawick Cashmere has invested heavily in whole garment technology

A Borders knitwear firm has shed 11 jobs at the same time as announcing a £700,000 investment in its business.

Hawick Cashmere has purchased six whole garment knitting machines.

Deputy chairman Jim Thomson said the redundancies were essential to protect the jobs of the other 100 employees who would remain at its Hawick base.

Earlier this year the company closed down a plant in Eyemouth blaming cheap overseas competition and improved knitting machine technology.

Hawick Cashmere now claims to be one of the most technologically advanced knitting factories in the world.

It recently announced the appointment of Japanese designer Masayo Urano to create the first fashion seamless cashmere collection.
