School smoke alarm funding plan
A 200,000 programme has started to fit smoke detectors in all primary schools across the Scottish Borders.

A total of 18 already have the sensors but a priority system has been drawn up for the other 47 with the larger schools receiving them first.

The detectors have to be hooked up to the fire service which the council said made them expensive to fit.

Once the funding has run out the authority said there was no guarantee the other schools would get the alarms.
