£5m mart plans hit sticking point
The need for a new roundabout on the A68 could prove a sticking point for proposals to create a £5m auction mart and rural centre in the Borders.

The development by Newtown St Boswells auctioneers John Swan Ltd would include two auction rings, a visitor centre and a hall with a 250 capacity.

It is proposed to site the new development on the other side of the A68 from the current century-old mart.

Development consultants say a roundabout is needed to improve access.

They believe it would also encourage visitors to break their journeys instead of heading north to Edinburgh.

However, Transport Scotland will have to be convinced about placing a roundabout on a major trunk road.

It is thought that the transport agency could voice opposition.

A meeting will take place between Transport Scotland and DTZ, the development consultants, before the plans are put before Scottish Borders Council this autumn.

Donald Webb of DTZ has described the proposed development as a statement of confidence in 21st Century farming.
