Major arts centre on the horizon
Langholm - Undiscovered Scotland
Langholm is to get the new arts centre by December this year
A major new centre for the performing arts is set to open in Langholm by December this year.

The Buccleuch Centre is the result of a £1.5m redevelopment of the old Buccleuch Halls.

The new facility was made possible due to a £660,000 grant from the Scottish Arts Council.

Funding was also secured from the Scottish Executive, Dumfries and Galloway Council and the South of Scotland European Partnership.

The aim is to have a year-round programme of arts activities.

The centre's chairman David Stevenson said it was keen to establish interest from touring soloists and groups - especially those who will be on the road in 2007.

'Warm welcome'

The Buccleuch Centre's auditorium will hold an audience of 350 with a stage big enough for touring dance or opera.

It is also planned to use the venue for social events such as weddings as well as fundraising events, fairs, lectures, films and presentations.

"We are close to Carlisle and only 20 minutes from the M6," said Mr Stevenson.

"This will make it convenient for many touring individuals and groups to use Langholm as a stop-over on their way north our south.

"We can promise them a warm welcome."

The news has also been welcomed by Jim Muir, chairman of the town's music and arts festival.

"We look forward to being able to host even more top quality artists in our new contemporary facility," he said.
