A major crackdown on underage drinking in Dumfries' "hotspots" is being stepped up after a drop in antisocial behaviour during its initial phase.

A four-week operation was launched on 19 May following an increase in public concerns about the problem.

The campaign saw a haul of 110 bottles and cans taken and reports of vandalism and noise pollution dropped.

Police are recycling the bottles seized during an operation in an effort to help the environment.

Community Sergeant Graham Kerr said the campaign was in response to public complaints.

Responsible solution

"We were receiving regular reports regarding underage drinkers in the town and this operation was organised to address public concerns," he said.

"While we were pleased to have such a high level of success disposing of the bottles gave us a bit of a headache.

"The only responsible solution was to recycle so that's what we're doing.

"For the rest of the summer we'll be keeping an eye on the level of underage drinking and making trips to the bottle bank every time we seize some more alcohol."
