Union in 'cost of living' protest

Fair pay protest in Galashiels
Unison staged "cost of living" protests across Scotland

The trade union Unison is staging a "cost of living" protest as part of its dispute over a 2.5% pay offer to council workers across Scotland.

Union members will dress up as various items in the family budget to highlight their local government pay concerns.

The protest will be staged in Edinburgh, Eyemouth, Galashiels and Melrose throughout Monday.

Council staff are due to take part in a second day of strike action over the pay dispute on Wednesday.

The protest is being staged in Eyemouth as it is the home ward of Councillor Michael Cook, who heads the Cosla negotiation team.

Unison says its "cost of living" race will highlight how local government wages have lagged behind the price of goods.

However, employers organisation Cosla has called on the union to "be a bit more realistic" in its demands.
