Total backs gas fields off Shetland

The French oil company Total has announced the go-ahead for the development of two gas fields west of Shetland.

The news comes despite no agreement yet being in place to lease land owned by Shetland Islands Council to build a processing plant.

Negotiations are still ongoing between lawyers on both sides.

A special meeting of the island authority is planned for Thursday morning to try to finalise a deal.
