Principal of Robert Gordon University dies

Mike Pittilo
Colleagues said Mike Pittilo would be sadly missed

Tribute has been paid to the "inspirational" principal of Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University after his sudden death.

Prof Mike Pittilo MBE, 55, passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He had been ill but had continued to work until last week, and the suddenness of his death was said to be a shock for everyone.

Prof John Harper, acting principal, said: "We've lost an inspirational leader who will be sadly missed."

Prof Pittilo joined the university in 2005 following a career in life sciences.

He was awarded an MBE last year for his services to health.

Prof Harper said his late colleague brought direction to the university and had a "warm rapport" with staff and students.

He added: "Our thoughts are very much with his wife Carol at this time."
