Shetland fire festival season under way

Fire festival season launch
The fire festival season was launched on Shetland on Friday

Shetland's spectacular annual fire festival season has been launched at Scalloway.

Jarl Michael Pottinger - known for the day as Sigurd Einstensen the Powerful - and his squad marched into the centre of the village through the snow.

The Scalloway fire festival kick starts the annual round of events which celebrate the return of the sun after the winter solstice.

The most spectacular is the Up Helly Aa in Lerwick at the end of January.
