The dead sperm whale was washed up at Balmedie Beach

A 40ft-long (13m) sperm whale has been found dead at Balmedie Beach in Aberdeenshire.

The mammal - thought to weigh about 40 tonnes - was reported washed up at about 1300 GMT on Friday.

Aberdeen Coastguard were alerted and were at the scene at the beach, north of Aberdeen.

The Scottish SPCA said they did not yet know if the large sperm whale was already dead before it reached the beach.
