Aberdeen bids for culture title

Aberdeen has been named as the only Scottish city so far to bid for the title of UK city of culture for 2013.

The department for culture, media and sport has received expressions of interest from 29 UK cities, but Aberdeen is the only one from Scotland.

The contest was launched following the success of Liverpool's role as European capital of culture.

It is hoped the successful city could host a range of lucrative events in 2013.
