Police have released the name of a man found murdered in the centre of Aberdeen in the early hours.

The body of Alan Bennett, 56, from the Cove area, was found by police and ambulance staff responding to reports of an injured man in Oldmill Road.

Det Ch Insp Mark Cooper of Grampian Police said he had been out in the city celebrating recent successes at work.

He appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time or who saw Mr Bennett to contact police.

Mr Bennett was last seen inside the Prince of Wales pub in St Nicholas Lane at about midnight, four hours before his body was discovered.

Det Ch Insp Cooper said: "We are appealing to anyone who might have seen Alan to contact us know in order that we can find out where he went after leaving the Prince of Wales.

"Anyone with any information - no matter how insignificant it may seem - is asked to get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Mr Bennett was wearing a light coloured bomber style jacket.
