Two measles cases in north east

MMR vaccine
Uptake of the MMR vaccine is high in the Grampian area

Health officials are investigating two cases of measles in the Grampian NHS area over the last week.

The health board said close contacts were being traced and advice given on immunisation and infection control.

Measles is extremely rare in the region, but there is no evidence to suggest the cases are linked.

Parents are urged to ensure children have received the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, with two doses recommended before leaving school.

Dr Helen Howie, consultant in public health, said: "In the NHS Grampian area the uptake of MMR is good and remains above the Scottish average.

"However, MMR vaccine can be given to individuals of any age and it is never too late to be vaccinated."

Measles is one of the most highly communicable viral infections and can be transmitted by droplets, spread when coughing and sneezing.

The most infectious period is from five days before the rash develops until four days after the rash appears.

Anyone who suspects they have measles should contact their GP by telephone and avoid busy surgery waiting areas where the virus can be spread.
