Sperm and egg donors are wanted to aid stocks

A health board has made an appeal in payslips for staff to donate sperm and eggs to help stocks.

NHS Grampian hopes suitable candidates will come forward after the appeal to thousands of staff.

Suitable male and female employees are being asked to donate in a bid to top up depleted stocks at Aberdeen's fertility clinic.

The message includes the plea: "Could you help someone have a much wanted child?"

It continues: "If you are a male aged 18-45 or female aged 18-35 and would like to find out about donating sperm or eggs contact the donor co-ordinator."

If people, through this appeal, even think about it then that's got to be positive and we welcome any efforts to raise awarenesse

An NHS Grampian spokeswoman said: "This is the first time the assisted reproduction unit have advertised for donors in NHS payslips - so far we have had three enquiries from this.

"There is an ongoing need for egg and sperm donors and although there have been a number of adverts and newspaper articles over the years, many potential donors who contact us say that they had previously not been aware that they could donate in Aberdeen.

"We are always looking for ways to inform people about the need for donors and the facilities available in Aberdeen."

She went on: "A press briefing in November 2007 resulted in 64 enquiries. Fifteen potential donors attended for an initial discussion and four went on to donate.

"During 2008 we had 40 enquiries of which eight attended initial discussions, however none went on to donate."

'Real need'

The spokeswoman added: "Some are not suitable due to medical conditions and others are concerned about the possibility of being contacted in the future by people born as a result of their donation."

Infertility Network UK (Scotland) welcomed the donor call in Aberdeen.

Spokeswoman Susan Seenan told the BBC Scotland news website: "There's a real need for both egg and sperm donors.

"It takes a very, very special type of person to come forward but it can make a real difference.

"It's not for everybody but if people, through this appeal, even think about it then that's got to be positive and we welcome any efforts to raise awareness."
