A skipper featured in the BBC television series Trawlerman hopes to land a role as an MP.

Jimmy Buchan, from Peterhead, has been selected as the Conservative candidate for the Banff and Buchan constituency at the next Westminster election.

SNP leader Alex Salmond has already announced his intention to stand down as the local MP at that election.

The SNP said Oxfam's Scottish campaigns director Eilidh Whiteford was set to be its candidate.

Mr Buchan told BBC Scotland he realised there was a lot more to the possible role than fishing issues.

The SNP said it looked forward to the challenge and that it had a strong local candidate in place.
