Art awards honour murdered Karen

An arts scholarship is being set up in New Zealand in memory of murdered Orkney woman Karen Aim.

The 26-year-old died after a night out in the popular tourist resort of Taupo earlier this year.

The plan is to award scholarships of $2,000 a year to two arts students in Taupo.

In return, the students will be required to produce a piece of visual art suitable for permanent display in either Taupo or Orkney.

The idea for the scholarships arose from Karen's love and professional involvement in the visual arts while she was working in New Zealand's north island.

A teenager charged with her murder has been committed for trial.

The 15-year-old accused, who was 14 at the time of the incident in January, has lodged a plea of not guilty.

The accused, who cannot be named, will stand trial at the High Court in Rotorua. His next appearance before trial is expected to be on Thursday.
