The MoD said Lucie's life support machine was switched off

A two-year-old girl has died after a "tragic accident" in a swimming pool at an RAF base in Cyprus.

Lucie Marke was pulled alive from the pool at the base in Akrotiri, where her father is stationed.

Parents Steve and Stacey, originally from Elgin, Moray, had to switch off the life-support several days after the incident.

It happened during a social event at the base. Lucie's body was flown back to RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire.

An inquest into her death has been opened and adjourned.

A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman told BBC Scotland: "A tragic accident occurred at a domestic swimming pool during a social gathering at RAF Akrotiri.

"Lucie was rushed to hospital following extensive life-saving efforts by personnel at the unit. Lucie was subsequently transferred and placed on a life support ventilator.

"Sadly she lost her fight for survival. Hospital staff in consultation with Lucie's parents switched off her life support."
