Boy on backpacker murder charge

Karen Aim
Karen Aim died after an attack in January in New Zealand

A 15-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of Orkney backpacker Karen Aim in New Zealand.

The 26-year-old died after being attacked following a night out in the resort of Taupo in January.

Ms Aim was found with head injuries and died in hospital, sparking a major police inquiry.

The hearing will decide if there is enough evidence for the case against the boy, who cannot be named, to proceed.

CCTV showed Ms Aim at a service station about half an hour before she was discovered lying in the street near a school.

Ms Aim had been visiting New Zealand for a second time, following a three-month trip in 2006.

She was buried in Holm, Orkney, after a funeral at East Mainland Parish Church on 29 January.
