A jealous husband who stabbed his estranged wife through the heart told police he had intended to kill himself in front of her, a court has heard.

Richard Farquhar, 50, pleaded with wife Anne, 45, to take him back after he had an affair, but admitted murdering her when she refused.

They were travelling along the A90 between Aberdeen and Stonehaven in January when the argument broke out.

Her body was found in the car. Sentence was deferred for reports.

Farquhar had had an affair, and his wife had started another relationship which made him jealous, the High Court in Glasgow heard.

He drove towards his wife's home at Cove, intent on killing himself in front of her, but instead saw his victim out walking, stopped and asked her to get in the car.

Mrs Farquhar later tried to escape by jumping from the car, but her husband pulled her back in and stabbed her through the heart with the knife he intended to kill himself with.

He called 999 to tell the operator that he had just killed his wife.

He agreed to meet with police officers and was arrested after paramedics declared that his wife was dead.

Farquhar admitted murdering his wife by repeatedly stabbing her on 18 January.

Ian Duguid, defending, told the court that Farquhar suffered from depression after finding out about his wife's new relationship.

Mr Duguid added: "Mr Farquhar was intending to kill himself in front of his wife on the day of the incident. There is a history of suicide in his family and Mr Farquhar again tried to kill himself in prison in April this year.

"He is devastated by the consequences of his actions. He killed his wife and the consequences for his daughter are enormous.

"He fully accepts that he is now facing a life sentence."

Judge Lord Brailsford deferred sentence until June for reports and Farquhar was remanded in custody.
