Aberdeen City Council is facing a legal challenge

Campaigners fighting to save a day-care centre are taking legal action to stop it being closed by Aberdeen City Council.

The authority wants to shut Choices, in Westburn Road, as part of its £27m budget cuts.

The centre offers respite care for 56 physically disabled people and is the only one of its kind in Aberdeen.

Campaigners have applied for an interim interdict at the Court of Session to stop it closing in a month's time.

It is believed to be the first time in Scotland that such action has been taken under new disability legislation.

Aberdeen North Labour MP Frank Doran is backing the campaign group's legal challenge.

The Accounts Commission is due to conduct a public hearing into the council's affairs later in May.
