Police divers will search the wreckage in the water

Police divers are to search for the driver of a car which plunged over 100ft cliffs on Orkney.

The car was found under water after a full air and shore search was launched involving lifeboat and coastguard crews at the cliffs at Yesnaby on Wednesday.

It is believed there may have been one man in the vehicle at the time.

A Grampian Police dive team was travelling to examine the wreckage in water at the foot of the cliffs on Friday.

Two Spanish tourists reported the incident shortly after 1300 BST on Wednesday.

'Highly-trained'

The Shetland Coastguard rescue helicopter was called to the scene, alongside Stromness lifeboat.

The dive team was heading to Orkney on Thursday and was expected to start the operation on Friday, when conditions were forecast to be favourable.

Grampian Police Supt Harry Thorburn said: ''Grampian Police divers are a highly-trained unit made up of officers who carry out other police duties as part of their normal routine but who assemble for search duties when required.

"The team, who are involved in all areas of search where a body of water is concerned, is regularly called upon not just within the Grampian area but within Tayside and Northern Constabulary areas."

Yesnaby lies on the west coast of Orkney's mainland, south of the ancient site of Skara Brae.
