Man jailed for 1970s sexual abuse

Glasgow High Court
Donaldson was jailed for 12 years at Glasgow High Court

A 60-year-old man who raped and sexually abused a girl over several years more than three decades ago has been jailed for 12 years.

John Donaldson started abusing his victim when she was 11 in the 1970s.

He was also found guilty after trial at the High Court in Glasgow of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl after giving her alcohol.

Donaldson, of Edinburgh, committed the offences in Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire and Alness in the Highlands.

'Protect public'

Judge Lord Hodge told Donaldson: "You have been found guilty by a jury of a sustained course of conduct. You preyed on young girls for your sexual gratification.

"You caused psychological damage to your victims and the risk of you causing harm to others is high. I need to protect the public.

"Your denial of this offending I must regard as a cause for concern."

Donaldson was also placed on the sex offenders register.
