Closing Aberdeen's forensics lab could seriously harm the detection rates of Grampian Police, it has been claimed.

The unit at Nelson Street offers services including fingerprint analysis and crime scene examination.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill is considering a proposal to move the service to Dundee.

The Scottish Police Service Association said it would not impact on forensic service delivery, but the Unison union said it was a vital local service.

It also processes samples for Northern Constabulary.
