Call for more police on streets

A call has been made for more police officers to be drafted onto the streets of Aberdeen to deal with drink fuelled violence among teenagers.

Speaking at the end of alcohol awareness week, Councillor Martin Greig said extra resources were needed to tackle underage drinking.

New legislation has already been introduced to crack down on the illegal supply of alcohol to teenagers.

But Grampian Police said enforcement alone would not solve the problem.

Supt Adrian Watson told BBC Scotland that measures to target retailers who sell alcohol to teenagers had already been taken, which he believed had been effective by raising awareness of the issue.

He added: "This is a priority, be under no illusions about that, to Grampian Police. With our partners we are targeting the individuals who involve themselves in such behaviour.

"It is not all about enforcement, it's not all about policing, we have all got a part to play in this and I also mean parental responsibility."
