Coastguard Alex Wylie warned walkers to take precautions
A lost walker has been found in Shetland after using his torch to guide searchers to his position.

The man had been out on the hills overnight for 12 hours in atrocious weather conditions when he was traced by Shetland Coastguard teams.

He was suffering from hypothermia and was taken to Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick for treatment.

The 33-year-old, from London, was on Ronas Hill when he alerted emergency services by mobile phone on Thursday.

'Remote areas'

He was able to give searchers his mobile number, allowing them to use their telecommunications equipment to narrow down the area that he was in.

However, the phone battery later ran down and contact was lost.

Alex Wylie, Shetland Coastguard watch manager, said: "The man was found in severe weather. He was not equipped properly for the weather conditions.

"We would like to remind anyone out on a walk in remote areas to ensure that they have told someone where they are going, be equipped for the activity to be undertaken and ensure that mobile phones are fully charged."
