Brussels flight sprouts from city

Brussels is seen as an important link for Aberdeen

A new air link between Aberdeen and Brussels is being established with the help of Scottish Executive funding.

Bmi Regional will start daily flights to the Belgian capital in April.

Transport Minister Tavish Scott said the service, supported by the Route Development Fund, would boost both businesses and tourism.

Mr Scott explained: "Brussels is one of the most important cities in Europe. This is great news. It will open up new opportunities."

'Important centres'

He added of Brussels: "It is the focal point of European Union business and this announcement is another step forward in our aim of increasing the number of direct air services between Scotland and the rest of the world."

Kevin Brown, the managing director of Aberdeen Airport, said: "This is an important new link for Aberdeen and the North East, and particularly for the local business community.

"We have long felt there was a need for a link between Aberdeen and Brussels, two of Europe's most important financial and commercial centres."

Bmi Regional has already announced it is to start daily flights between Aberdeen and Kristiansand in Norway from 26 March.
