Three local weekly newspapers in North East Scotland have been sold to a new owner as part of an £11.2m deal.

Archant, the owner of the Buchan Observer, Fraserburgh Herald and Ellon Times titles, has sold them to Johnston Press.

The company, which also owns The Scotsman, said it would consult with staff at the papers once the deal was approved by the Office of Fair Trading.

The sale also comprises five free papers in the central belt.
