The comhairle said the centre will have "dynamic office space"

Contractors have been asked to register interest in building a new media centre in Stornoway on Lewis.

Some £2m will be spent on turning a former textile mill into a centre for media and the creative industries.

Western Isles Council - Comhairle nan Eilean Siar - has asked firms to download details on the project from its website.

The European Regional Development Fund and public agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise have allocated funding.

The site is on Stornoway's Seaforth Road.

The comhairle architects had come up with "dynamic office space" for businesses and individuals.

Its construction includes structural repairs, replacement of roof coverings, building fabric repairs, fitting out, new extensions to the existing building, external landscaping and car parking.

Comhairle leader Angus Campbell said the project offered opportunities for local contractors and suppliers.

He added: "The project demonstrates the Comhairle's commitment to moving ahead with capital investment in order to stimulate the local economy."
