Toxic gas probe at traveller site

A council has ordered an investigation of a travellers' site following concerns the land was contaminated.

The area at Stadium Road in Inverness is reclaimed land having been used as a landfill site between 1919 and 1965.

Highland Council said soil samples will be taken for testing and boreholes sunk to help monitor for gases.

It said: "Landfill sites can contain substances which are harmful to human health, which include the landfill gases methane and carbon dioxide."
