WeeW opens up in 'Woolies' street

The new store's staff includes former Woolworths workers

A store called WeeW has opened as a replacement for a Woolworths that closed in the Western Isles.

Ex-workers of the town's "Woolies" - one of 815 closed after the chain went into administration with debts of £385m - are among its staff and investors.

The new Stornoway store's name is a play on the title of Woolworths' major outlets - Big W.

WeeW is on the same street as its predecessor and aims to fill a "void" left by its closure.

The new business, in Cromwell Street, has been welcomed by the local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

Earlier this week, it was reported that two former Woolworths stores in Thurso and Wick were to be reopened as clothes shops.

Merseyside-based clothing chain Ethel Austin, which has 270 stores across the UK, has taken over the premises.

Sixteen jobs will be created between the two shops.
