A man is missing after falling into the water at a popular beauty spot.

The 27-year-old, who has not been named, fell into the Water of Nevis near to the Steall Falls in Glen Nevis on Sunday afternoon.

Terry Confield, of Lochaber Mountain Rescue, said he believed the man had been playing on boulders with friends when he slipped into the water.

"We did an exhaustive search of both sides of the gorge but could not find him," Mr Confield said.

"So we think he has been sucked under the water by the current. There had been some heavy showers prior to the accident which increased the river levels."

A plan to resume the search at the beauty spot has been postponed until the water level has dropped to a safer level.

Mr Confield said conditions were currently too dangerous for his team.

He said: "The water level is higher than yesterday, and yesterday it was virtually impossible for us to get near.

"We did a fair search around the gorge yesterday, as much as was humanly possible to do."

A Northern Constabulary spokeswoman confirmed the search had been delayed but that the situation was being closely monitored.
