Job hope after isle yard leased

Up to 60 fabrication workers could be employed at the yard

Up to 60 jobs could be created in the Western Isles after an energy firm agreed a 12-year lease at a Stornoway fabrication yard.

BiFab's occupation of the site at Arnish Point was negotiated with Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

The yard will help the Fife-based firm handle orders for oil, gas and renewable energy projects.

First Minister Alex Salmond and the local council Comhairle nan Eilean Siar welcomed the agreement.

Mr Salmond said it was further good news following turbine producer Skykon's takeover of the Vestas yard in Campbeltown.

He added: "It demonstrates yet again that although economic conditions are tough, Scotland's renewables sector continues to go from strength to strength, sparking investment and creating valuable employment opportunities across the country."

Jobs creation is a major issue on the Western Isles.

The islands have a ratio of 44 jobseekers per advertised vacancy, according to the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
