Five stars for battlefield centre

Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre
The new Culloden Battlefield centre opened in December 2007

The Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre is to be awarded five star status from tourism body VisitScotland.

Opened in December 2007, the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) spent 9.5m constructing and fitting out the building and restoring the battlefield.

The trust said the site has had 140,000 visitors since opening to the public.

The new designation for the centre will be awarded at a ceremony on Tuesday. Culloden saw Jacobite forces defeated by a government army in April 1746.
