Primaries could shut on islands

Up to 17 primary schools could close on the Western Isles.

The move was agreed at a meeting of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's education committee because of falling school rolls and the poor state of buildings.

Councillors have decided to conduct a public consultation exercise, but the comhairle said no schools had been earmarked for closure at this stage.

Previously, the local authority has looked at shutting junior secondary schools.
